Heading 6
Zeeland is an archipelago, a group of peninsulas joined by bridges, foot ferrys and tunnels. Each island has typical traits, be it peace and quiet in Tholen and Sint-Philipsland, or the jolly bustle of the Walcheren coast. Water, water, everywhere: it is never farther than 15 minutes away. The area is made up of perfect cycle infrastructure. Zeeland has been nominated by the Dutch national cycle platform as one of the best-rated cycling provinces in the Netherlands.
Vlissingen is found in the Walcheren district of Zeeland. The area has the most sun out of any area of the Netherlands and is protected from the sea by high dunes. A sea front town with bars, restaurants, marina and even a maritime museum. From Vlissingen you can visit a wide area of Zeeland.

We make an afternoon coastal stop at Cadzand - Like many areas of Zeeland, Cadzand has had its struggles with the sea, a rich heritage of mud flaps and marshes, quaysides and dikes. The Cadzand coast has a history of bathing dating back the the first Badhuis ‘bath house’ in 1866. Ladies and men could hire bathing suits. The ladies would then be transported by horse and cart to the sea for a discrete swim.
On day 1 - BRESKENS LOOP - we will be riding a 41.6 mile loop around the Bresken coast - we ride long Canal paths and through polders. Through nature reserves and beautiful coastal towns. Today includes refuel stop in the beautiful town of Sluis. Although it was largely destroyed by Allied bombs at the end of WWII, the city ramparts, belfry and windmill right in the centre of town give this nicely rebuilt place a historic touch.
After leaving Cadzand we are only a short distance from Breskens where we will take the bike ferry across to our base in Vlissingen. The ferry takes approx 20 minutes.

Vlissingen (historically known as Flushing) is a port town in the Dutch province of Zeeland, situated on the northern bank of Western Scheldt, just at its estuary on the North Sea.
It is the third largest town of Zeeland with 45,381 inhabitants. The town is industrial in character and is connected by a large canal to Middelburg and onwards to the inland lake of Veerse Meer. In summer, tourists and day trippers flock to the city's well-known 2.6-km-long boulevard, which is also a sweep spot for maritime aficionados, as large ships pass by the Vlissingen coastline perhaps closer than anywhere else in the world.

Whilst in Vlissingen we will be staying at a newly refurbished 4* hotel, 2 minutes walk from the main boulevard and sea front. The hotel has a bar and restaurant, as well as a pool and sauna that is open daily from 8am to 10pm.

Breakfast is included in the package as well as all lunches and snacks. Evening meals are not included as everyone likes to do different things with their spare time. We have our favourite restaurants and you are more than welcome to join us!

DAY 2 - WATERWAYS LOOP - For years Zeeland battled with the sea, causing major disruption for many years including the catastrophic North Sea floods of 1953. Today's route takes us on an impressive journey showing Zeelands battle and ultimate win over the sea. Zeeland is made up of incredible bridges and sea defences. We ride across The Zeeland Bridge - the longest in Europe at 5022 Metres, the Oostersscheldering a giant Dam built as part of the sea defences and past the Plompe Toren - water water everywhere!
The Plompe Toren, between 1475 and 1650 at least 15 villages became victim to the sea and vanished - the only building to remain is the Plompe Toren. You can climb the tower for free and often see seals laying on the sandbanks.
Today's stops include the beautiful traditional Bakkerji Sonnemans in Hamsteede. Lunch in the historic town of Zierikzee and an afternoon beer/coffee stop at the beautiful Brasserie De Panhoeve.
DAY 3 - VEERSE MEER LOOP -The Veerse Meer lake was born out of the Delta Works construction. This 62 mile route runs all around the lake. The Veersedam will blow you away, or off your bike, perchance.
The cycle path rarely abandons the water’s edge along the way. Sailboats and surfers, criss-crossing the water, will keep you company. The streets and gables of historical Veere town vividly tell the tale of the past. Plenty of spots to take a breather here, too.

After breakfast we head out toward Middleburg across the Veerse Gatsam, a man made barrier across the former eastern Scheldt estuary. The Zeeland Bridge was completed the year before and Veerse Meer was created.Once a turbulent sea arm, now a water sports paradise for surfers, canoes, sailors, water skiers, divers and fishermen. A beautiful nature reserve with 17 islands in the lake. 5 are left to nature.
On arrival back at the hotel there will be plenty of time to relax in the pool or you may wish to walk along the famous boulevard which is only 5 minutes walk away.
Todays stops include a refuel over looking the Eastern Storm Barrier, a BBQ lunch on the edge of Veerse Meer and a visit to the historic town of Veere.
During the evening you may decide to take a walk into central Vlissingen. On a Saturday the town comes alive and our favourite bar even does Karaoke!
DAY 4 - BUNKER LOOP -This 42 mile route runs along the remainder of Walcheren’s bunkers, not to mention two Second World War museums. Rich in variety, this route takes you past the visible scars of the Second World War. The German occupying army reinforced the Walcheren coastline, from 1942 onward. The result: a defensive line of bunkers, tank moats and robust road blocks. Around Koudekerke, there are obvious remnants of this so-called land front. All in all, there are some 80 bunkers left, dotted around Walcheren. Always wondered what was behind those huge concrete walls? Set foot in Zoutelande, at the Bunker Museum, and find out.
Today's stops include a refuel near Westkapelle and a farewell lunch in Middelburg. As we leave Middelburg it is a short ride back to Vlissingen and onto the bike ferry back to the start in Breskens.
From here we will say our goodbyes, with many miles in our legs and hopefully lots of fond memories!
